with Kim Tribe

Although I had fly fished for some twenty years and had fished for a further twenty years before that in other ways, it was the first time I had ever arranged to spend time with a fishing instructor and guide: so I felt as nervous as a maiden before her bridal night… Or almost. What would the expert make of my rough and ready equipment, not to mention of my casting and general ignorance?

I was reassured as soon as Kim stepped out of his car with his smiling and welcoming face. I knew here was a friend and companion, not a condescending expert. For quite some time I plied him with questions, all of which he answered patiently and very fully. Later as we set up our rig, he managed to teach me several useful knots, quite an achievement, given that I had not evolved much further than a triple granny!

Then it was time to go down to the river. Within a few minutes I had caught a pound and half grayling using the weighted nymph technique I had never used before. In the next few hours he introduced me to two other techniques and also showed me how to fish stretches of water that normally I would have ignored. A day or so later when I was fishing the Edw on my own I decided to re-fish pools that I had already just fished without success, using a Kim Tribe indicator technique. On each occasion the results were miraculously gratifying!  Apart from fish landed,there was a big one that shot off and broke me. I knew that I would never have hooked that fish using a more conventional technique. I know that in future I shall catch quite a few fish in this way that I would not otherwise have caught. Each time I do so, I shall mutter under my breath that’s another Kim Tribe trout. So I felt my day with Kim had been well spent as it had taught me a lot and given me much food for thought.

But apart from this,  Kim proved the most generous (he even lent me his Polaroids because they were better than mine!), cheerful, enthusiastic and entertaining of companions. A good teacher, he also proved a good friend. I hope that it will not be the last time I have the pleasure of fishing with him!
